Communities
East Lynn Lake is located in Wayne County, West Virginia, roughly ten miles south of the Town of Wayne. Construction of the dam began in 1968 and it was completed in 1972 by the US Army Corps of Engineers.
Prior to the lake's construction, the most concentrated areas of habitation were in the communities of Stiltner, Rich Creek, Kiahsville, and Cove Creek.

Cemeteries
Twenty-six cemeteries containing 1,203 graves were relocated during the construction of the lake. Most of these graves were reinterred at a site prepared near the community of Armilda, which is located on State Highway 37, between the town of Wayne and community of East Lynn. However, a few were reinterred at alternate sites at the request of surviving relatives.
